Not just fuel: energy stores are correlated with immune function and oxidative damage in a long-distance migrant

【摘要】Inmanyanimals;catabolicandanabolicperiodsaretemporallyseparated.Migratorybirdsalternateenergyexpenditureduringflightwithenergyaccumulationduringstopover.Thesizeoftheenergystoresatstopoveraffectsthedecisiontoresumemigrationandthusthetemporalorganizationofmigration.Wenowprovidedatasuggestingthatitisnotonlythesizeoftheenergystorespersethatmayinfluencemigrationscheduling;butalsothephysiologicalconsequencesofflying.IntwosubspeciesofthenorthernwheatearOenantheoenanthe;along-distancemigrant;estimatedenergystoresatastopoverduringautumnmigrationwerepositivelyrelatedwithbothconstitutiveinnateandacquiredimmunefunction;andnegativelyrelatedwithoxidativedamagetolipids.Inotherwords;migrants'physiologicalconditionwasassociatedwiththeirenergeticcondition.Althoughtimespentatstopoverbeforesamplingmayhavecontributedtothisrelationship;ourresultssuggestthatmigrantshavetotrade-offthedepletionofenergystoresduringflightwithincurringphysiologicalcosts.Thiswillaffectmigrants'decisionswhentostartandwhentoterminateamigratoryflight.Thephysiologicalcostsassociatedwiththedepletionofenergystoresmayalsohelpexplainingwhymigrantsoftenarriveatanddepartfromstopoversiteswithlargerenergystoresthanexpected.Weproposethatstudiesontheroleofenergystoresasdriversofthetemporalorganizationof(avian)migrationneedtoconsiderphysiologicalcondition;suchasimmunologicalandoxidativestates.
